The very best of vegan Vancouver

The very best of vegan Vancouver

The city of Vancouver is among Canada’s best-kept secrets. Except it’s not a secret. As soon as anyone moves there, it’s all they talk about. The children of east coast parents stray and are never to be seen again, trapped forever in the talons of hipster chefs and small-batch brewers. The place is a veritable vegan paradise.

Here are Vancouver’s five best vegan-friendly restaurants.

Chau Veggie Express

An almost entirely vegan counter-service restaurant, Chau serves up piping hot bowls of Vietnamese-inspired, plant-based cuisine that will have you coming back again and again.

Among the best items on the menu are the Rice Fields Bowl, which is a steaming pile of noodles, tofu and veg served alongside a savory lychee broth, and the Coconut Shake. Yes, it’s a nine-dollar beverage without booze in it, but it’s worth it.

Virtuous Pie

This fully vegan spot is a source of endless plant-based delights, so arrive hungry.

The menu doesn’t stop at mind-blowing vegan pies. It boasts ice-cream sundaes, cookies, donuts from the city’s best donut spot, kombucha on tap, and an impressive list of sides.

Nuba isn’t a vegan restaurant. Heck, it’s not even vegetarian, but it serves up some of the city’s best vegan food nonetheless.

Among the restaurant’s list of Lebanese delights are a number of clearly marked vegan options, all of which are well worth the visit to any of the city’s three locations.

Don’t leave without trying the hearty lentil Mjadra, or the Najib’s Special, a melt-in-your-mouth plate of lightly fried cauliflower served with savory tahini.

Bandidas Taqueria

A commercial drive hot spot, Mexican-inspired Bandidas Taqueria is a must-try for anyone visiting Vancouver’s super trendy East Van neighborhood.

This vegetarian restaurant offers a number of vegan options, alongside an extensive drinks list, well into the wee hours of the night. Well, midnight, maybe — which is late by Vancouver standards. Everybody’s got plans for the farmers’ market or a trip to beautiful Joffre Lakes in the morning.

The Arbor

‘Incidentally’ vegetarian restaurant The Arbor offers up top-notch food sourced largely from local suppliers.

With a wide array of vegan options, this upscale-casual spot delivers plant-based versions of classic dishes like Caesar salad, fried ‘oysters’, and onion rings.

The Pulled Jackfruit Steamed Buns are made from scratch in-house and come highly recommended.
