Five tips for staying vegan while travelling

A lot of people think you can’t go, or stay, vegan while on the road. But while it can be a bit disorienting or daunting to a new vegan, it’s totally possible — and you can even enjoy the ride.

Five tips for staying vegan while you travel follow.

ABS. Always bring snacks. This is a good tip for everyone all the time, to be honest.

Having bars, chips, nuts, dried or fresh fruit and any other food you can carry on hand is always a good idea. Sure, we can’t live off of this stuff but it helps stave off hunger while you sort out a more long-term plan. And if you’re prone to hanger, it’ll help avoid a very public temper tantrum you might live to regret.

If you’re staying in an AirBnB, hostel, or hotel with a kitchen, cooking is an easy solution.

While this may seem like a compromise to the adventurous eater, it presents an awesome opportunity to explore local fruits and vegetables, and stay healthy as you go, if you’re into that kind of thing.

This is a big one if you’re in a country where you don’t speak the language. Get data and download a translation app on your phone so you can ask if something has eggs or honey in it with ease. This is also helpful for translating ingredient lists on food packaging.

Better yet, if you’re a real go-getter, it’s a good idea to learn some of the language.

No kidding. In a pinch, French fries are almost always vegan, and who doesn’t like them? On the beach in Korea? French fries. At a pub in Spain? Patatas fritas.

Or pick something else you love but know is bad for you, like potato chips or dark chocolate, and enjoy having an excuse to eat it for dinner (not that you need one). When it really comes down to it, flexibility is key.

Don’t worry. You’ll live to eat another day.
