Inspection reports found pigs boiled alive at Dutch slaughterhouses
The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) found through inspections in Dutch slaughterhouses that pigs were being slaughtered while they were still alive and aware. It was reported that NVWA inspectors saw pigs drowning in boiling hot water, seen to be kicking and screaming. This was reported 6 times in the 18 months, between January 2018 and May 2019. The slaughterhouse workers were not checking whether a pig was unconscious, resulting in the animals being slaughtered while awake and aware.
Pig slaughterhouses in the Netherlands are subject to a large amount of checks and regulations and in 21 of the largest slaughterhouses, random checks occur. Yet, inspectors cannot oversee each individual slaughter. Not only are some of the pigs cooked alive and experience unspeakable deaths, many live in their own faces and urine, resulting in serious inflammations and infections that they are unable to even stand up.
One inspector wrote: “The pigs must be dead at this stage. I saw a pig lowered into the hatchery tank and be submerged in the hot water of about 60 degrees. The animal went berserk to such an extent that water gushed over the tank.” The subsequent animals that went into the tank were not dead either. “I saw several pigs thumping with their hind legs. I also saw that a pig threw it head back and started struggling violently. The animal was still alive.” Another inspector found a live pig dumped in the cadaver box.
According to Varkens in Nood, it is now really time for a change. “The only solution is independent camera surveillance on every slaughter line,” Frederik Schouten of Varkens in Nood said to RTL. “And a slaughterhouse that still goes wrong more than once must be closed immediately.”
At Living Vegan we believe the only solution is to shut down these torture chambers and make it illegal to treat animals with such disregard.
