Review: Buddha Cups from Brooklyn, NYC

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Laura, one of the founders of Buddha Chocolate, raw chocolates made from organic plant ingredients. I was asked if I’d like to review their Buddha Cups. Raw chocolate almond butter cups – I didn’t need any convincing, they sounded amazing! A little over a week later I received 3 beautifully packaged Buddha Cups, 1 single cup and a boxed set of 2 cups. I was so excited to try them! I’d never tried raw chocolate before so I was really curious to see what it would be like. I love both almond butter and chocolate so I expected to really enjoy them.

The Basics

Buddha Cups are raw chocolate almond butter cups handcrafted in small batches in Brooklyn, NYC. Buddha cups are made using organic raw plant food ingredients from fair trade farms. The chocolates are raw,  soy-free, gluten-free, and vegan. The packaging is unique, eye-catching, and well thought out.

Flavour & Texture

Buddha Cups weren’t what I expected, they were better! They’re unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. The 78% cocoa raw chocolate with Himalayan crystal salt and mesquite is a lovely combination that results in an extremely rich, deep dark chocolate treat. Combine that with the creamy, thick almond butter and the outcome is unreal. The Buddha Cups’ texture is also unique, the raw chocolate is melt-y but not perfectly smooth and silky like “regular” dark chocolate. They taste so decadent and rich that one cup easily satisfies a strong sweet craving.

Nutrition & Ingredients

The ingredients list is short and contains only high quality ingredients: cacao, almonds, coconut palm crystals, mesquite, vanilla bean, and Himalayan crystal salt.

Each raw chocolate almond butter cup contains:

  1. 110 calories
  2. 8g of fat
  3. 3g of protein
  4. 2g of fibre
  5. 3g of sugar
  6. 8% of your RDI  of calcium
  7. 25% of your RDI of iron

Extremely impressive for a chocolate treat that tastes amazing! Low in sugar, a good source of iron, full of healthy fats, and the protein and fibre are great too!

Overall Impression

These are very high quality, sophisticated chocolates. The packaging is so eye-catching and beautiful. Their design is intricate and well-thought out complete with sticker seals of their Buddha Cups logo and  a unique book-style box that opens to reveal a cute little story and the cups’ nutritional info.  I would highly recommend these to anyone who loves unique dark chocolates. Buddha Cups would make a unique and memorable gift for any chocolate lover. It’s great to see that they’re creating chocolate for people with a variety of dietary restrictions, whether you’re gluten-free, soy-free, vegan, or just trying to eat more whole foods diet, these make a great and satisfying treat.
