Review: Great Full Sweet Potato Cookie by The Cookie Department

I was recently contacted by Akiva, a co-founder of The Cookie Department, offering to have me sample their Great Full Vegan Sweet Potato Wellness Cookie. I was intrigued, sweet potato in a cookie? I accepted, and patiently awaited their arrival. I soon received 3 large individually wrapped Great Full cookies in the mail. It was time to start sampling!

The Basics

The Cookie Department is the producer of “fully functional” cookies. Classic cookies combinations fortified with “active” ingredients – healthy, real food ingredients that add purpose to their cookies. They have a product line of 6 different “wellness cookies”, however only the Great Full Sweet Potato Wellness Cookie is vegan. Each cookie comes individually wrapped for freshness. The cookies are baked and distributed by the Cookie Department, based in Berkeley, Ca.

Flavour & Texture

The Great Full Cookie’s “active” ingredients are sweet potato, cranberries, and oatmeal. These taste like a lightly spiced gingerbread-oatmeal cookie.

They’re delicious! I was impressed with the amount of cranberries in the cookie, they were loaded! They’re perfectly sweet and certainly don’t taste too healthy!

The cranberries and oatmeal were easily noticeable within the cookie, but I couldn’t really distinguish any sweet potato flavour. Sweet potato is lower on the ingredients list than I would’ve expected, and if it weren’t for the packaging I never would’ve guessed these cookies contain any sweet potato at all. I think that the main purpose of the sweet potato is to add a touch of sweetness, moisture, and health benefits, not so much for the flavour.

The cookie is a little on the drier side, but not in a bad way. Their texture makes them a match made in heaven when dipped in soy milk (or any other non-dairy milk!) We also tried heating them up in a microwave for just 30 seconds. Wow. Now they were moist. They’re delicious on there own, but I would definitely suggest trying them with soy or almond milk, or heating them up slightly, because that made them amazing.

Classic gingerbread flavour, fortified with sweet potato, oatmeal, and cranberries.

Nutrition & Ingredients

The Cookie Department’s Great Full cookie is a delicious treat that you can feel good about eating. The cookie is made with premium ingredients, no preservatives, artificial flavours, or trans fats.

1 serving (1/2 a cookie) contains:

  1. 130 calories
  2. 4g of fat
  3. 1g of fibre
  4. 15g of sugar
  5. 1g of protein
  6. 10% of your RDI of vitamin A
  7. 4% of your RDI of iron

For a whole cookie they’re a little high in sugar, but these are meant to be a treat!

Ingredients: Brown Sugar, Unbleached Flour (Hard Red Winter Wheat, Ascorbic Acid, Enrichments), Dried Cranberries (Cranberries, Sugar, Sunflower Oil), Canola Oil, Sweet Potato Puree, Whole Oats, Evaporated Cane Sugar, Quick Oats, Water, Molasses (Clean), Sea Salt Topping, Pure Vanilla Extract, Baking Soda, Sea Salt, Ground Cinnamon, Ground Nutmeg.

Overall Impression

I loved the idea behind The Cookie Department’s “Fully Functional” cookies. The Great Full cookies are tasty, made with high-quality ingredients, and packaged individually (the packaging is lightweight and minimal!) I really liked the unique flavour idea – a sweet potato oatmeal cookie with gingerbread spices and loaded with cranberries, wow.

The texture is a tiny bit on the dry side, but that’s just a minor complaint and it wasn’t an issue for me. I really think it comes down to personal preference. Dipped in a little soy milk, or gently heated and any hint of dryness is completely taken care of. Once I got to thinking about it, the minor dryness made perfect sense. I think it’s important to realize that these cookies don’t contain any preservatives and were shipped nearly 1,500 miles to get to me! In my opinion, a cookie that is just a tiny bit dry is a whole lot better than one that’s moist and chock full of fat, preservatives, and chemicals. However, it would be nice to see a manufacturer’s date on the packaging, in addition to knowing what your food is made with, it’s also nice to know when your food was made.

All in all, I think the Great Full cookie is a great product. The true test was whether my boyfriend would like them, he’s not as healthy a eater and is not a fan of sweet potato, but he loved these! If you like oatmeal cookies, gingerbread, and cranberries, you will love these cookies.

Where To Buy

The Cookie Department’s Great Full cookie can be purchased online from their website at 12 for 30$. They’re also available at a number of retail stores, which you can view using their store finder.
